Obesity is typically defined as 30% above normal or ideal weight. While we do not have this pet’s specific weight guidelines, we can tell from the visible drooping or sagging of the abdomen and stomach along with the absence of an abdominal waist when viewed from above that this dog has a BCS of 9. If we were able to physically examine this dog, we would not be able to easily feel its ribs or hipbones, another criteria for a BCS of 9.
It is important to be accurate and honest when performing the BCS. It doesn’t help to hide the fact that a pet is overweight or obese in an effort not to inadvertently offend the pet owner. Clients visit us for our expert opinion and advice. If we minimize or “normalize” the overweight state, we only harm our patients.8 A pet that carries a few extra pounds is at risk for developing many serious and incurable diseases and disorders, such as Type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and osteoarthritis. It is our duty as veterinary healthcare providers to help prevent these medical conditions by educating our clients on the dangers of excess weight.
