NATIONAL REPORT — The Chihuahua could become even more popular as a result of the current Disney movie, "Beverly Hills Chihuahua," released in October.

The dog already ranks 12th in popularity among 158 AKC breeds, and its ranks may be growing.

Experts say potential buyers should research the breed before taking one of the little dogs home.

Here are some of the more common Chihuahua afflictions and conditions:

» Digestive problems, including constipation

» Eye infections

» Fragile bones due to their size

» Heart problems

» Hydrocephalus (water on the brain)

» Hypoglycemia (low blood sugar)

» Obesity

» Patella luxation (a knee problem) and other joint issues

» Prone to dental disease

» Reproduction (particularly the birthing process)

» Seizures and nervous- system issues

» Skin and coat problems, including dandruff, hair loss, acne, warts, etc.

» Tracheal collapse and respiratory problems
