Computers increase competency
It's increasingly difficult to be a competent doctor without technology.
A review published in the June issue of The Milbank Quarterly says that doctors who don't use technology, such as electronic medical records and computerized prescription entry, could fall short of professional standards. Authors of the review reached these findings by analyzing scientific literature, Web sites, and their own personal experiences working with medical professionals.
While technology doesn't replace human interaction, the bottom line is that it's increasingly difficult to be competent without technology. The review points out that e-mail communication with patients, automated reminders, and specialized Web sites can help doctors do more in the smaller amount of time allotted for patient care.
