Hartford, Conn.

-- Connecticut veterinarians are now required by law to obtain at least 24 hours of continuing education every two years.

House Bill 6678, signed into law by Gov. M. Jodi Rell in July, mandates continuing education for those in the medical health professions. The Connecticut Veterinary Medical Association (CVMA) supported the measure, asking the Department of Public Health to include veterinarians in the bill.

The CE requirement will affect license renewals beginning in July 2011. Therefore, the CE credits must begin accruing two years prior to renewals beginning July 2011.

CE may include meetings and online education in one's professional field of interest.

Proof of credits does not have to be submitted with license renewals, but veterinarians will have to sign stating they completed the requirement.

Keeping proof of attendance on file is suggested.

The Department of Public Health may sanction any veterinarians who fail to comply.
