Construction begins on large scale veterinary research facility at UC-Davis

-- This laboratory groundbreaking is significant, according to veterinary officials from the University of California-Davis.

In fact, the 76,000-square-foot, $58.5 million research facility at the veterinary school will bring together 50 faculty members from more than 24 disciplines after its completion in December 2012. Some 40 research teams will explore a variety of animal-health related problems from environmental pollution, food safety and public health to infectious diseases.

This groundbreaking, the university reports, "is the capstone for the first phase of the veterinary school's ambitious $354 million building program."

"The location and design of Veterinary Medicine Research Facility 3B will enhance student education and promote research collaboration and discovery," adds Dr. Bennie I. Osburn, dean of UC-Davis veterinary school, in a prepared statement. "Animals, humans and the environment will benefit from the work to be accomplished here."
