Dr. Patricia Conrad elected to prestigious Institute of Medicine

Davis, Calif. — Dr. Patricia Conrad, a veterinary pathologist and professor at the University of California-Davis School of Veterinary Medicine (UC-Davis) has been elected to the Institute of Medicine.

An independent, non-profit branch of the National Academy of Sciences, election to the Institute of Medicine ranks as one of the highest honors in health and medicine. Conrad joins 10 other current and emeritus UC-Davis faculty who are members of the institute.

Conrad, an expert on how parasitic diseases are transmitted between wildlife, humans and domestic animals, is co-director of the One Health Center at UC-Davis. She has also been recognized for her work on the tick-borne disease babesiosis. Her research in Africa led to the discovery of two new species of related babesial parasites in dogs and humans.

Conrad, who has been a member of the UC-Davis faculty since 1984, also worked to improve the diagnosis and control of bovine neosporosis. In 2004, Conrad became the first veterinarian to receive the Aldo Leopold Leadership Fellowship.
