GREENFIELD, IND.—Elanco introduces Rumensin, (monensin sodium), the only U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved feed ingredient for use in lactating and dry cows that increases milk-production efficiency.
The product promotes more milk per pound of feed while maintaining the wholesomeness of milk, the company says.
Trial results showed that cows fed Rumensin were 2-4 percent more efficient. Adding Rumensin to the diet provides increased milk-production efficiency at all stages of the lactation cycle, Elanco says.
Whether the benefits of feeding Rumensin are seen through reduced feed inputs or the increased output of milk, they are created by improving rumen fermentation so that cows get more energy from the feed they eat thus producing more milk per pound of feed, the company says.
During fermentation within the rumen, carbohydrates from feed are converted into volatile fatty acids (VFAs).
Propionic acid is the most efficient VFA in converting feed energy into usable energy for the cow. Feeding Rumensin changes the microbial populations in the rumen, increasing the production of propionic acid, and decreasing the proportion of less-efficient VFAs and waste products like methane, the company explains.
The FDA-approved Rumensin can be fed to dairy cows at an inclusion rate that ranges from 11 grams per ton to 22 grams per ton of a complete feed on a 100 percent dry-matter basis.
Elanco recommends that producers start feeding Rumensin to lactating and dry cows at the 11 grams per ton rate, and then work with nutritional advisors to determine the feeding level that's right for their herds.
U.S. dairy producers have fed Rumensin to dairy heifers to control coccidiosis and improve weight gain.
Rumensin can be purchased through traditional animal health and nutrient suppliers.
Rumensin Premix will be available in 50-pound bags containing 80 grams of monensin sodium per pound.
The product must be thoroughly mixed into feed before use. There is no withdrawal period from the product, the company adds.
