There are a lot of misconceptions when it comes to drug enforcement and regulation for veterinary practices. First and foremost, says Lisa Penny, RPh, FSVHP, director of pharmacy at the Cornell University Hospital for Animals, every veterinarian at your practice needs their own personal DEA number.
Some believe that only one veterinarian needs their DEA number and then the rest of the practice can work underneath them, but that's not true. And by making sure each veterinary team member has their own DEA number, each team member is then held accountable for their actions.
