Exotic Companion Mammal specialty welcomes first eight diplomates

Dr. Jennifer Graham of Boston; Dr. Cheryl Greenacre of Maryville, Tenn.; Dr. Cathy Johnson-Delaney of Kirkland, Wash.; Dr. Joerg Mayer of Southbridge, Mass.; Dr. Sandra Mitchell of Saco, Maine; Dr. Connie Orcutt of Brookline, Mass.; Dr. David Vella of Australia; and Dr. Robert Wagner of Pittsburgh, Pa., all earned the accreditation, paving the way for others to enter the new specialty.
The American Board of Veterinary Practitioners oversees the accreditation process, and says the main focus of the Exotic Companion Mammal specialty are "pocket pets" like ferrets, rabbits, mice and rats.
The specialty was created in 2008 and applications for the 2009 examination were accepted until Jan. 15, 2009. The examination took place in October.
