WASHINGTON — The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) found Salmonella in a sample of Wild Kitty Cat Food's raw product, and makers of the product have voluntarily issued a recall.

Last month, FDA warned consumers not to buy or use 3.5-ounce and 1-pound containers of Raw All Natural, Frozen Cat Food, Chicken with Clam Recipe, manufactured by Wild Kitty Cat Food in Portland, Maine.

Cats eating the food could become infected with Salmonella as well as people handling it, the agency says.

At presstime, FDA was unaware of any reports of illness.

Representatives of Wild Kitty Cat Food say the warning affects less than 1,000 pounds of cat food, which consumers could have purchased since July 2006.
