How to talk with clients about the importance of TWICE a year visits for cats, about blood work, and tips on whether the cat is in pain (even if the client has no idea as of course cats mask pain). Included are tips all clients can look for discern if their cat is in pain, from mouth pain, GI-related to OA, featuring the newGrimace Scale. There is a place for telemedicine for veterinary professionals to watch the cat at home, as your eyes will watch differently than clients. If the cat is anxious about the veterinary visit (the carrier appears and the cat disappears), new data suggests then clients will also be anxious and less likely to visit for preventive care. Basic carrier training is covered. Also, how millennials are concerned about their cats’ emotional health and well-being more than previous generations—they want answers.

Tension, stress, and hyperarousal are common obstacles for successful treatment of fear, anxiety, and aggression problems in dogs. Teaching a dog how to relax, both physically and physiologically, can be a helpful foundation exercise with widespread applications. This presentation will introduce a variety of ways to condition a reliable relaxation response using techniques that can be applied to many different patient temperaments and learning styles. Video examples will be provided to illustrate key points that maximize the success of this technique. Practical applications for incorporating this exercise into treatment plans for a variety of behavioral diagnoses such as noise phobia, resource guarding, and leash reactive behaviors will also be covered.
