A few of our conference speakers shared what they do outside their veterinary practices
From the kitchen to the farm to the ice rink to the streets, Fetch faculty Heather Kvitko-White, DVM, DACVIM; Kwane Stewart, DVM; Erik Zager, DVM, DACVECC; and Bash Halow, LVT, CVPM recently shared their interests and activities with After Hours™, a Medical World News® program that takes viewers beyond the traditional veterinary space and outside the industry to showcase the hobbies and passions of animal care professionals.
Kvitko-White, founder and president of Missouri-based KW Veterinary Consulting, sat down with dvm360® to discuss her life as a “rink rat.” Growing up with a love of skating, Kvitko-White carried that passion with her into her adult life. In addition to skating, she also began playing ice hockey with fellow veterinary classmates. These days, she continues to enjoy skating, and play ice hockey, with the hope that her love for the ice will rub off on her children.

Stewart—now star of “The Street Vet” television show—noticed a person experiencing homelessness with his pet, as the California resident entered a conveniece store. He asked if he could examine the pet, which appeared to be suffering from a bad flea infestation. After treating the animal, Stewart decided he was going to give back to his community by providing free veterinary care for the homeless. Now, more than 5 years later, Stewart has launched Project Street Vet and continues to help those in need.

In Hong Kong, during the COVID-19 pandemic, Zager, a veterinary criticalist for Philadelphia Animal Specialty and Emergency hospital in Pennsylvania, discovered a love of baking while stuck indoors and looking for something to do. Now when he’s trying out new recipes, he uses his baking to bring his team together one tasty treat at a time.

Halow was inspired by a late relative to follow his dream for raising chickens. Halow built a coop in a single day, using materials already on hand at his farm. In this interview, he discusses his enjoyment of having these chickens live in his barn, and the calming effect they have on him.
