Hear What Your Colleagues Think #AVeterinarianis

Article

For the past few week's we've been asking "What do you think a veterinarian is?" Here are some of the thoughtful, heartfelt responses we've received.

Vet and Corgis

A veterinarian is intelligent, passionate, comforting. My favorite veterinarian is my daughter Jennifer! Her enthusiasm and genuine love for animals is evident in her practice and her personal life. She revels in client's joy over new additions to their families, she comforts those whose pet's lives are coming to their natural end. She's been pooped on, scratched, bit, yelled at, hugged, and loved! For 3 years, she has driven over an hour to get to a practice that she loved because it "practiced the kind of medicine she wanted to practice". She loves her job and her patients and it's an inspiration to me to see that kind of commitment to one's chosen profession. I'm so proud of her, Dr Jennifer Given, and all that she's accomplished. — Patti Trzcinski

A veterinarian is the only person who cares as much for my pets as I do. — David French; North Carolina

A veterinarian is a genius protector of our world's animals. Bill Schroeder; InTouch Practice Communications

Woman and Cat

A veterinarian is a rock star. We have to be able to help the patient and help the owner at the same time. We have to be able to understand diseases when animals can't speak to us and really think outside of the box in regards to current treatments and modalities. At the end of the day, we're helping 2 beings—the patient and the owner—and I consider that to be a rock star. — Sherman Canapp, DVM, DACVS; Veterinary Orthopedic Sports Medicine Group

A veterinarian is a fearlessly compassionate person who provides care and concern for their patient and clients on a daily basis. — John Owens; Law Office of John Owens

I think a veterinarian is a lot of things, but I think one of the biggest compliments—and one of the biggest misunderstandings the public has—is that a veterinarian is a real doctor. — Stephen F. Cital, RVT, SRA, RLAT, VTS-Lab Animal

A veterinarian is someone who is compassionate, caring, morally and ethically responsible, but most important, who wants to do what is best for their patients to improve quality of life for both the human and the animal so there can be an excellent human-animal bond. — David Dycus, DVM, MS, CCRP, DACVS; Veterinary Orthopedic and Sports Medicine Group

It's not an easy job and it's not an easy industry. Your patients are trying to bite you and it can be stressful in a lot of ways. But what motivates veterinarians is really the health care of the patient and really caring about the client as well. — Dawn Burdette; Henry Schein Animal Health

A veterinarian is generous. Veterinarians go through an enormous amount of school and in some cases more school than a human doctor does and they make a fraction of the pay. They have to be specialists in every field of medicine not just their own. Veterinarians give their time, energy, and compassion to everybody.Heather Romano, SHRM-CP; iVET360

A veterinarian is a doctor, but also a scientist. And I would say a compassionate scientist. We are a trusted member of an animal's medical team, whether that animal be a working animal or a beloved pet. — Anne Barger, DVM, MS, DACVP; University of Illinois

A veterinarian is a compassionate, highly educated medical professional, who protects the health and wellbeing of animals and people. During my 20+ years in executive search and recruiting in the Animal Health Industry and Veterinary Profession, I have had the privilege to get to know thousands of veterinarians. Veterinarians are hard-working passionate individuals who contribute in a big way to society to making both animals and people's lives better. Veterinary Team

A veterinarian is a supporter. I think that the veterinary profession is all about support—it’s support for the client, be that the pet owner or the livestock producer, and it’s support for the animal itself, and it’s support for the peers around us. That to me define the veterinary profession quite clearly. — David Bartram, BVetMed, FRCVS; Zoetis

First and foremost, in general veterinarians are fantastic people. They're empathetic, caring, people—and not just for pet owners and pets, but for the team members that work for them. From the moment we received Maxwell, he has been seeing Dr. Cotler who owns South Brunswick Animal Hospital. Dr. Cotler has been compassionate, caring, and patient with us.
