The recall includes prescription diet and over-the-counter canned food; supplier cited as source of error.
Hill's Pet Nutrition is voluntarily recalling varieties of canned dog food following the discovery of elevated levels of vitamin D, according to a company release. An internal investigation by Hill's confirmed elevated levels of vitamin D in 25 of their canned dog food varieties after receiving a complaint regarding a dog showing clinical signs of elevated vitamin D levels.
Hill's cited the cause as supplier error and will require the supplier to implement additional quality testing, according to the release. The company also promised to add further ingredient testing to the existing safety protocol.
Depending on the length of the pet's exposure, vitamin D toxicosis can present clinical signs such as vomiting, loss of appetite, increased thirst, increased urination, excessive drooling and weight loss. Severe cases could lead to renal failure or death.
Dog owners should contact their veterinarian immediately if their dogs have consumed any of the products listed below, and dogs exhibiting any of these signs should be taken to the veterinarian immediately.
So far, the voluntary recall only impacts canned dog food distributed in the United States (U.S.) and is being conducted in cooperation with the FDA. At this time, no dry foods, cat foods or treats are affected. If products sold outside of the U.S. are determined to be affected as well, that information will be communicated on that country's Hill's website, according to the release.
Veterinary professionals and pet owners should discontinue feeding and dispose of canned foods with the specific lot/date codes listed in the chart below. Discarded products can be replaced free of charge through the Hill's website or by calling 1-800-445-5777. Visit Hill's for more information.
