An effective way to wipe up anal gland secretions is with a little of your favorite ear-cleaning solution on a gauze square. The solution breaks up the secretions the same way it breaks up earwax, removing residue and leaving the area clean. And the ear-cleaning solution may be more acceptable to pet owners who do not like the smell of deodorizing sprays or find them ineffective.
