Christina Moore, DVM, MBA: I would say there's a couple of really key reasons why externships are important. First, the veterinary schools right now and teaching hospitals are experiencing the same thing that hospitals across the country are experiencing, which is a shortage of veterinarians, and difficulty in finding more veterinarians, and they need those veterinarians to teach. So in a lot of cases, the students can get experiences in their externships with GP [general practice], or ER [emergency room], or multiple specialties, that maybe they can't get in their teaching hospital right now because that hospital has either had to shut down a service or doesn't have enough clinicians teaching in certain services. So I think it's an amazing learning opportunity for students who maybe wouldn't get those opportunities in their own teaching hospital.
