Many businesses continue to struggle, but the majority are still optimistic about the future.
Could the economy finally turn around this year? According to a new survey, small business owners think it just might.
Seventy-nine percent of small businesses have a neutral to confident outlook for the U.S. economy over the next 12 months, according to the Small Business Attitudes and Outlook Survey conducted by Constant Contact Inc., the American Chamber of Commerce Executives, Service Corps of Retired Executives, and the Association of Small Business Development Centers. Of the small business owners surveyed:
> 70 percent expect to see moderate or significant growth in 2010
> 39 percent expect to hire additional employees
> 64 percent reported moderate or significant increases in materials and supplies in the last year; 57 percent said the same about marketing costs; 45 percent reported jumps in taxes
> 57 percent reduced operating costs due to economic pressures; 43 percent reduced their marketing budget; 43 percent reduced travel and entertainment spending
