National Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners searches for new executive director

Selected candidate will fill shoes of longtime NBVME leader John Boyce.

The National Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners (NBVME) is currently searching for a new executive director. The winning candidate will replace the retiring John Boyce, DVM, PhD, who has been at the helm since the organization’s inception nearly 25 years ago.

The executive director serves in a strategic role as the administrative officer of the corporation to make recommendations and participate in the formation of policies for the organization. “The successful candidate will be a visionary strategic thinker and will have a pulse on where veterinary medicine is going,” states a release from VET Recruiter, the company hired to execute the search.

More specifically, the executive director leads the NBVME staff, working closely with the secretary treasurer, finance committee and board of directors to oversee financial affairs while also overseeing contracts and agreements with the organization’s legal counsel. The executive director also oversees NBVME publications, human resources and office technology. Externally, the executive director is the face of NBVME and works closely with individuals and state veterinary licensing boards and will interact with organizations such as the American Association of Veterinary State Boards, the American Veterinary Medical Association, veterinary medical colleges and other veterinary organizations.

Boyce will retire concurrently with his wife, leaving his long-held post next summer. “It has been a great experience, but we want to be able to spend more time with our family and doing other things, including serving in our church, taking road trips and taking walks and fixing fence on our place in the badlands of western North Dakota,” he says. Boyce plans to continue serving as executive secretary of the North Dakota Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners.
