A new insurance offering from AAHA and Petplan aims to bring more options for pet owners facing major illness- or accident-related veterinary expenses.
The American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) and Petplan pet insurance have joined forces, revealing this week the AAHA Pet Health Insurance Program.
Offered by Petplan, the program is designed to help clients pay for unexpected expenses associated with illnesses and accidents.
Under the agreement, Petplan will be the preferred insurance provider of AAHA, handling enrollment, underwriting, administrative support, and claims management for the program. Petplan is one of the largest pet insurance providers in North America, currently insuring more than 1 million pets. Twelve to 15% of veterinary hospitals in the United States and Canada are accredited by AAHA.

The program is part of AAHA’s Healthy Workplace Culture Initiative, which aims to help veterinary teams create work environments that foster well-being.
“Pet health insurance is important because it offers pet owners and practice teams another way to manage the cost of veterinary care and help pets get the care they need,” said AAHA Chief Executive Officer Michael Cavanaugh, DVM, DABVP (Emeritus). “At the end of the day, this helps reduce strain in the veterinary practice while simultaneously increasing pets’ access to care.”
The program aims to help pet owners understand the value of pet insurance—and to provide service at every budget level. Policyholders can receive up to 90% reimbursement of the cost of veterinary treatment for unexpected injuries and illnesses—plus associated diagnostic and examination fees. Coverage is available throughout the United States and most of Canada.
At Petplan, we want to help ensure that veterinarians are able to give pets the care they need,” says Steve Shell, co-CEO of Petplan. “It’s our goal to ensure that more pets have worry-free illness and injury coverage from the start.”
