- A new way to vaccinate against avian flu, developed at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, could better protect against mutations and multiple flu strains.
By delivering vaccine via DNA, making the vaccine part of the cell instead of providing a simple immune response to one particular flu strain, the treatment could be better equipped to fight off the rapidly changing disease than a typical vaccination.
Avian flu is changing constantly, thus presenting challenges for creating vaccine stockpiles in the event of an outbreak, researchers say. The new discovery could solve that problem, because the new vaccination would work against multiple strains.
