• When pet owners Andy and Kim Brocchini, along with their son Will, discovered that their 3-year-old Yorkshire terrier/poodle mix, Whitney, was floating unresponsive in the family pool. Andy jumped into action and thanks to his knowledge as a firefighter/EMT he was able to administer CPR to Whitney.
• Destination Pet LLC announced that it is removing the non-compete clause from its employee's contracts for veterinarians and will be in effect October 2, 2023. This policy change includes both new hires and already existing team members.
• Nationwide Pet Insurance shared its top finalists for the 15 annual Hambone Award. This award honors one Nationwide insurance pet whose injuries or predicament caused a unique or unless claim. Check out each of the finalists and their unique story that landed them in the top 10.
• On this week’s episode of The Vet Blast Podcast, host Adam Christman, DVM, MBA, and this week’s guest Stephen J. Birchard, DVM, MS, DACVS, discuss open wound management for cats and dogs, including a crucial step veterinary professionals need when caring for these patients.
• During her lecture at the Directions in Veterinary Medicine symposium in Nashville, Tennessee, Jenny Cassibry Fisher, RVT, VTS (Oncology), explained to attendees what technicians can do to care for patients with suspected or diagnosed cancer.
• A US Senate bill, The Rural Veterinary Workforce Act, addressing the shortage of veterinarians in the United States was introduced by proposing a tax benefit for veterinarians who are working in rural communities to hopefully help increase access to veterinary care as well as address concerns about food safety and public health in these rural areas.
• The Los Angeles Zoo disclosed earlier this week that on August 28, 2023, it welcomed a southern tamandua pup (Tamandua tetradactyla). The newborn is currently still unnamed and bloodwork will be used to determine its gender.
