SPRINGFIELD, N.J. — The New Jersey Veterinary Medical Association (NJVMA) managed to have veterinarians exempted from being required to obtain National Provider Identification (NPI) numbers.

The NJVMA had negotiated with the state's Division of Consumer Affairs since April regarding the new prescription-blank law, and specifically the requirement that as of Oct. 1 prescription blanks require an NPI.

The government issued the mandate for all medical providers to limit Medicaid and Medicare fraud.

Because DVMs do not deal with either program, an exemption was made.
