Oklahoma City
-- City council members voted unanimously this week to skip the landfill and give animals euthanized at the Oklahoma City Animal Shelter to Oklahoma State University’s (OSU) veterinary college for use in teaching students and technicians.
A spokesperson said the city is simply redirecting cadavers from the landfill to the school, and that no animals would be euthanized to help the school.
At the same time, the number of euthanized animals may drop at the shelter, thanks to a $600,000 gift from the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA).
The grant is to help the shelter become a so-called “no-kill” shelter by instead funding more adoptions, transfering animals to other adoption agencies and improving returns of lost pets to owners.
