It's second straight 'Big Win' for OSU; school's SAVMA chapter receives cash, trophy

TOPEKA, KAN. — Jamie Freyer, a third-year veterinary student at Oregon State University, is the winner of the 2008 Hill's Big Win Scholarship Challenge.

Big winner: Dr. Christine C. Jenkins, director of academic affairs at Hill, presents a check for one year tuition to Jamie Freyer, a third-year veterinary student at Oregon State University.

Freyer will receive a scholarship for one year's tuition (up to a maximum of $25,000). In addition, the college's Student American Veterinary Medical Association (SAVMA) chapter will receive $5,000 and the Hill's Big Win Challenge traveling trophy.

"I was pretty shocked to see our school get the back-to-back win," Freyer says. "I am extremely thankful to Hill's for the help they provide to our school's veterinary-student programs and especially for this amazing tuition gift."

This was OSU's second consecutive win.

To participate, veterinary students attended a Big Win meeting at their school, after which one winner was selected at each school. Students spent the winter semester voting for their school.

Hill's provided each of the meeting winners with a trip to the AVMA Convention to gain continuing education and networking experience, to explore the latest cutting-edge developments in animal health and to attend the SAVMA Delegate Luncheon, where the scholarship winner was selected.

Oregon State recorded one of the highest percentages of veterinary student votes this year, and Freyer's name was drawn at the luncheon to win.

"In addition to reducing Ms. Freyer's educational expenses, the Big Win gift from Hill's will enhance our Student AVMA chapter's ability to support extracurricular educational opportunities for students during the upcoming year," says Cyril R. Clarke, BVSc, MS, PhD., Dipl. ACVCP, Lois Bates Acheson Dean, Oregon State University College of Veterinary Medicine.

This was the third year for the Hill's Big Win.

The 2009 event will begin in January. Visit www.HillsVet.com/vetsudent for more information.
