Petco no longer sells rabbits

Article

Starting in 2009, Petco will only arrange rabbit adoptions, not sales.

Petco stores are no longer selling rabbits. In line with its Think Adoption First philosophy, the company now only aids in adoptions, as it does with dogs and cats. All rabbits that were for sale were rolled over into the adoption program on Jan. 1.

Previously, the company sold rabbits and helped arrange adoptions through local and national shelters and other animal organizations. By encouraging people to adopt—rather than buy—rabbits, the new policy aims to reduce surrender rates. Rabbits, the third most popular companion animal in the United States, are the third most common animal given up to shelters.
