After more than 10 years of commuting to New York City, Dr. Laurie Hess was ready to set up shop closer to her home in Bedford Hills, N.Y. Practicing exclusively on exotic animals, she split her time between five small animal practices in the area while she began planning for her own clinic. When the economy collapsed, rent became much more affordable, so Dr. Hess jumped at the opportunity.
She discovered the perfect property: Located just five minutes from her home, the space was previously used as a furniture store and a fitness equipment store. She figured the large showroom in the front of the building would function as the reception area, and a bit of redesign in the rear would complete the conversion.
