Situated in the heart of the Minneapolis-Saint Paul metropolitan area, the University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine admits 100 veterinary students per year and offers a dual degree program in veterinary medicine and public health. In addition, early admissions/decisions programs are offered to ensure the college meets the needs of underserved populations as well as the growing need for food animal veterinarians. The college’s Veterinary Medical Center (VMC) is the nation’s busiest veterinary teaching hospital, treating more than 35,000 companion and 4,000 large animal patients annually.
The college’s Diagnostic Laboratory, Equine Center, and Raptor Center provide outstanding specialty facilities, and together with the VMC offer unsurpassed expertise in diagnosing, treating and eradicating disease. The Center for Animal Health and Food Safety, the National Center for Food Protection and Defense and the Global Initiative for Food Systems Leadership confirm the college’s standing as a leader in global health and food safety.
The college’s faculty is nationally and internationally recognized for teaching and research excellence. Research strengths include infectious disease, genomics, comparative medicine, public health, epidemiology, and dairy, swine, and avian medicine.
“The mission of our college is to improve the lives of animals and people and we strive to do this on a daily basis through research, service, and providing a comprehensive education to our students,” says Dr. Trevor Ames, dean of the College of Veterinary Medicine. “We are proud that our efforts are recognized as being among the top in the nation. This recognition will fuel our efforts to continue making a difference in veterinary medicine and the world we all share.”
