The California non-profit will establish a chapter in Atlanta, Georgia
Project Street Vet (PSV), a nonprofit public charity based in California that provides veterinary care, treatment, and support to pets experiencing homelessness, is opening a new chapter in Atlanta, Georgia. In partnership with Fetch by the Dodo (Fetch), this will be the first time the nonprofit has expanded its services outside of Southern, California since it was founded by Kwane Stewart, DVM.
"We are incredibly proud to support Project Street Vet's expansion," expressed Paul Guyardo, CEO and president of Fetch, in an organizational release.1 "The launch of the Atlanta chapter demonstrates that Stewart's unique model of bringing vital health care to pets in need can be replicated nationwide."
Stewart launched PSV in 2020 and provides services such as vaccinations, routine exams, and lifesaving surgeries for free to those in need. According to the release,1 PSV receives support from Fetch through financial contributions, community-awareness campaigns, and reaching volunteers and donors. As of today, Fetch has donated over $50,000 and is currently running a fundraising campaign until the end of the year where it is matching dollar-for-dollar donations up to $101,000.
"I started Project Street Vet to address an urgent need and to provide judgment-free care to the pets in our communities that need it most. Our expansion to Atlanta is hopefully the first of many. I look forward to partnering with Schmidt and thank her for her time and dedication as she leads our efforts in the local community," said Stewart.
This new chapter is run by Kristen Schmidt, DVM, with her team already having treated 60 pets as of October 2022. With a long history of volunteering with people experiencing homelessness, including volunteering at a weekly pet care clinic while attending the University of Florida’s College of Veterinary Medicine, where she discovered her passion in life was to help pets and their owners in need.
"I am thrilled to join the Project Street Vet team and continue the great work started by Stewart and Fetch," said Schmidt. "Our pets are our family, and regardless of someone's circumstances, I strongly believe that everyone should have access to the pet care they need. I am proud to build a team and extend important veterinary care to those who need it most."
