Put portly pets to the challenge

Article

Help clients help their pets shed the extra pounds.

It's time to get with the program and help pudgy pets shed those extra pounds. Purina PetCare has launched the 2009 OM Weight-Loss Challenge to do just that. Between now and Nov. 30, overweight pets who lose at least 5 percent of their starting weight help their veterinary clinics qualify to earn prizes.

Before beginning the program, veterinary teams give participating pets a thorough health assessment and make diet and activity recommendations. Clients receive pet weight-loss tips and are encouraged to return to the clinic with their pets at 30-, 60-, and 90-day intervals to measure the pet's progress and monitor its health. Last year's winner, Allie, a miniature pinscher tipped the scales at 19 pounds-nearly twice her ideal body weight. While participating in the Weight-Loss Challenge she shed nearly 9 pounds, and her owner says, she's a totally transformed dog that now runs and jumps with renewed energy.
