Reducing the risk of gastric-dilatation volvulus

Video

Which dogs are most at-risk and preventive measures you and your veterinary clients can be taking.

The consequences of gastric dilatation-volvulus, or GDV, are so dire that early identification of at-risk dogs so you can take preventive measures is warranted. First, you might like to know which breeds you should be worried about. In these dogs, you might consider a prophylactic gastropexy to prevent the tummy twisting in the first place. We asked veterinary surgeon Dr. Jennifer Wardlaw which breeds she considers candidates for this preventive surgery.

We also had Dr. Wardlaw outline other GDV risk factors and preventive measures you and your veterinary clients can be taking. Note: Some of these factors are clinic-based, including patient handling and a surgery that might make dogs more prone. So make sure you're aware of how you could inadvertently contribute to this life-threatening emergency.
