WEST LAFAYETTE, IND. — Preliminary research shows a correlation between periodontal disease and heart disease in dogs, according to a Purdue University researcher who's mining Banfield, The Pet Hospital data on 200,000 patients.
The study, poised for submission to the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association, follows work in humans that links oral and heart health. Crunching the numbers is Larry Glickman, VMD, DrPH, a professor of epidemiology and environmental health at Purdue University School of Veterinary Medicine. The scientist collaborates with the nationwide chain to glean trend data from records on thousands of patients.
