Franklin, Tenn.
-- Some Pedigree pet food sold in Albertson's stores in Southern California and Las Vegas were recalled out of concern for potential Salmonella contamination.
Mars Petcare US announced the voluntary recall Aug. 8, affecting about 100 20-pound Pedigree brand Complete Nutrition Small Crunchy Bites formula bags sold at at some Albertson's. The bags were to have been held because of positive tests for Salmonella, but were inadvertently shipped to a Tracy, Calif., distribution facility, according to Mars spokesperson Debra Fair.
Though the final product tests were negative for Salmonella, Fair says the company is taking the extra precaution of working with Albertsons to pull any of the affected bags from store shelves and contact any customers who may have purchased some. Mars is cooperating with the Food and Drug Administration on the matter, Fair says.
