Shedding the pounds

The clinic contributes the program's success to two main factors. "First, we assign each pet a weight-loss coach," Pepper says. "The coach, a technician or veterinary assistant, keeps track of the pet's weight loss through phone calls and reminder cards.
"Then clients bring the pets in once a month for a weight check," she says. "To keep everyone motivated, pets get a toy or bag of low-calorie treats at each weigh-in."
A weight-loss champion board in the lobby features each pet that completes the program. "Clients love that their pets receive extra special attention, and we love that the clients are helping their pets live longer, healthier lives," Pepper says.
