The Space Shuttle Endeavor is sending Purdue University's avian project into orbit.
Ronald Hullinger, professor of developmental anatomy in Purdue's School of Veterinary Medicine, is experimenting with the effects of zero gravity on avian embryonic development and reproduction.
The project, which initially involved strictly chicken eggs in the mid-1980s, is now a joint venture with Slovak researchers who will send Japanese quail eggs into orbit.
The eggs will be divided into two groups. One will be subjected to a centrifuge that will create a gravitational force similar to that on earth. The other group will be allowed to develop in the weightless environment of space.
