Even if you're planning to build a new, bigger facility, you need to make the most of your space. These tips from Tony L. Cochrane, AIA, a principal with Gates Hafen Cochrane Architects PC in Boulder, Colo., can help:

Create multifunction areas so you can use the same space for several tasks.

Keep a close eye on your traffic flow to avoid wasted space.

Install windows and interior glass to make the space seem larger.

Consider trends in your client base. For example, if you perform a lot of diagnostics but not as much surgery, design your work areas accordingly.

Smaller hospitals come with lower start-up and project costs, less overhead, fewer management headaches, and more flexibility in terms of location. But your cost per square foot can run higher because you're squeezing so many things into a small space. So do a little homework--and design a small hospital that gives you big returns.
