College Station, Texas

-- The Texas Deer Association (TDA) awarded Texas A&M University's College of Veterinary Medicine $50,000 in research funding for studies that will benefit the deer industry.

Texas A&M was selected by a national research committee on behalf of the North American Deer Farmers Association as the most eligible location for the Farmed Deer Disease Applied Genetics Research Center, according to TDA. The research center was approved in the 2008 Farm Bill and is now going through Congress' funding process.

Texas has more than 1,000 deer-breeding operations, which contribute more than $650 million per year to the state's economy. The deer industry generates about $2.3 billion annually nationwide, says TDA.
