Texas A&M to open new cancer facility

College Station, Texas- 3/31/08 - The Texas A&M University Board of Regents has approved the College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences to begin construction on a veterinary imaging and cancer treatment center.

Expected to greatly enhance students' clinical experience and improve the quality of medical care available, the facility will use X-ray and electron beams, through a linear accelerator, to treat large- and small-animal cancerous tumors.

"Many of the spontaneous cancers that appear in animals are very similar to those in humans, and the technology needed to treat them is the same. The things that we learn from the treatment of our patients may well impact how humans are treated for cancer in the future," says Dr. H. Richard Adams, dean of veterinary medicine.
