The Challenges of Managing Illness in Older Pets

Video

One of the main challenges veterinary practices may face when managing illness in senior pets is getting to the problem early.

Heidi Lobprise, DVM, DAVDC, veterinary dental specialist at Main Street Veterinary Hospital and Dental Clinic in Flower Mound, Texas, explains that one of the main challenges veterinary practices may face when managing illness in senior pets is getting to the problem early. Early protection can be key, she stresses.

In addition, Dr. Lobprise says it’s important for the veterinarian to work with the pet owner to find the best quality of life for the older pet using the least invasive treatments. Dr. Lobprise recognizes that conversations about older pets can be disconcerting and emotional, but says that managing these cases from the beginning is key to maintaining long, healthy lifespans for patients.
