The Effects of Xylitol on Your Dog

Tina Wismer, DVM, DABVT, DABT, MS, medical director at the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center, explains how Xylitol can be dangerous to dogs.

“One of the newer toxicants out there is Xylitol, and it is a sugar alcohol, which is found in a lot of sugar-free products. We can find it in baked goods, sugar-free gum, even things like peanut butter, or a lot of these new chewable, over-the-counter supplements. Xylitol is very dangerous for dogs, it actually can drop their blood sugar and even cause liver failure. We need to always make sure we check the labels and don’t let those products be in our house around our pets.”
