In a recent interview at the Atlantic Coast Veterinary Conference (ACVC), Melissa Shapiro, DVM, defined the Piglet mindset education tool, plus how it derived from a teacher in Massachusetts who used the story of Shapiro's blind and deaf dog—Piglet—to empower students to learn resilience, empathy, kindness, and inclusion.

Melissa Shapiro, DVM: A Piglet mindset is facing challenges with a positive attitude and we added inclusion into the package of Piglet mindset to include acceptance, inclusion, empathy, and kindness. We use Piglet as an example for an individual facing challenges with a very positive attitude, [a lot of] enthusiasm and resilience, and he is a very effective teaching tool not just for kids, but also for adults who are inspired by his very enthusiastic, happy life that he leads despite his challenges.
