Tips & Tricks: Giving Fluids

Deborah Silverstein, DVM, DACVECC, associate professor of critical care at the University of Pennsylvania, talks about some quick tips and tricks for administering fluids to a veterinary patient.

First of all, don't be afraid of fluids, says Dr. Silverstein. They are your friend, but they can also lead to adverse effects. Close-monitoring while administering fluids is also important. Carefully evaluating the patient's initial presentation is important, as well, and Dr. Silverstein says don't forget you need to repeatedly reevaluate.

Try not to give too much fluids, but make sure you're giving an adequate amount. Be cautiously judicious in the choices of fluids, she says, and monitor frequently for any changes or potential complications.
