UC gets Gates grant for global health school

Davis, Calif. -- The University of California, Davis (UC Davis) School of Veterinary Medicine will be a part of a new School of Global Health at University of California, San Francisco, thanks to a $4 million grant from the Bill and Melina Gates Foundation.

-- The University of California, Davis School of Veterinary Medicine will be a part of a new School of Global Health at University of California, San Francisco, thanks to a $4 million grant from the Bill and Melina Gates Foundation.

Plans for the School of Global Health were announced in February as a huge undertaking that would combine the university's 10 campuses and numerous disciplines. UC schools playing a role in the global health initiative include the School of Veterinary Medicine, but also the schools of engineering, law, agriculture, business and social science.

The School of Global Health is expected to open in 2011 with the help of the grant and tackle many issues, including re-emerging diseases.
