U.K. study explores high risk of suicide among veterinarians
Southampton, U.K. -- Veterinarians in the United Kingdom are four times more likely than members of the general population and twice as likely as other health-care professionals to commit suicide, according to a new study.

Suicide risk factors for veterinarians include work-related stressors, ready access to drugs that can be abused, professional and social isolation and negative effects during undergraduate training, reports the study's authors D.J. Bartram, BVetMed, DipM, MCIM, CDpAF, FRCVS, and D.S. Baldwin, MB, BS, DM, FRCPsych.
The study was conducted at the Southampton University School of Medicine and published last month in Veterinary Record.
