The Memorial Scholarship Program will support veterinary education and help dispel the stigma of cannabis medicine use within the veterinary sector.
VETCBD Hemp—a veterinarian-founded cannabis company—recently announced that applications for its inaugural Memorial Scholarship Program are open now through October 1, 2021. The scholarships, which are named to honor beloved companion pets that have passed away within the VETCBD family, will award veterinary students, veterinary technician students, and veterinary technicians across the nation with $1,000 each to be put towards school tuition.
“Our inspiration for creating this first-of-its-kind scholarship opportunity that marries cannabis and veterinary medicine, stemmed from cannabis traditionally being stigmatized in the veterinary space,” said Tim Shu, DVM, VETCBD founder and CEO, in a company release.
“Our goal is to change this stigma while continuing to invest in the health and wellbeing of animals. In states such as Colorado, millions of dollars in scholarships have been funded through legal sales of cannabis, and at VETCBD, we want to directly support those who have dedicated themselves to helping animals live healthy lives,” Shu added.
According to the release, the company will award 6 total scholarships biannually to the following groups: 2 veterinary students, 2 veterinary technician students, and 2 registered veterinary technicians (RVT) with existing debt. To be considered for the program, applicants must be nominated by their peers in the form of an essay and will be selected based on their ability to integrate and uplift their peers, create positive environments for teamwork, and exhibit compassion and empathy for their patients, clients, and peers.
To qualify, applicants must be residents of the United States, be age 21 or older, and adhere to the following requirements:
