-- Veterinarian-turned-politician Jim Shuler (D-Va.) is up for re-election today, and his opponent is a college student from his former alma mater.
Shuler has served as the 12th District Representative in Virginia’s House of Delegates since 1994.
His challenger, Independent candidate Paul Cornett, is a student at Virginia Polytechnic Institute, where Shuler received a bachelor's degree in 1966 before entering veterinary school at the University of Georgia.
Both are native Virginians and vying to represent a district that includes Blacksburg, Va.
