Veterinary managers on the move

More veterinary hospitals than ever are sporting new managers to take the load off overworked veterinary practice owners.

Practice owners tell us their day-to-day team management and financial issues are more than they can happily handle alone. If you’re considering hiring a manager, check out the data on the following pages to learn what other practice owners looked for in a manager and how many are hiring outside the clinic. Plus, we asked a manager whether it’s worth it to spend the time and money to become a certified veterinary practice manager (CVPM). This credential could spell job satisfaction for the practice manager who needs some learning to keep fresh.

Hiring in practices may be down these days, but managers are still in big demand. A whopping 16 percent more practices surveyed picked up a manager since the same time last year.

Attaining the certified veterinary practice manager (CVPM) credential is the next step for an experienced manager, says Donna Bauman, CVPM, hospital administrator at the four-practice Veterinary Specialty Care in Mount Pleasant, S.C. It certainly was for her.

When Bauman started her latest job, the owners and associates she began working with were appreciative of her experience and CVPM credential. “It’s respected,” she says. “They were asking me if I could start a management group in the area.”

Bauman says owners used to ask for experience or a business degree when they hired a manager. “I have both,” she says, “but now they’re interested in the CVPM.”

Here’s how it works: The Veterinary Hospital Managers Association certifies CVPM candidates after successful completion of a three-and-a-half-hour test, which demonstrates knowledge of veterinary management issues in human resources, marketing, finance, and more. Applicants need at least three years’ experience as a practice manager in the past seven years as well as 18 hours of college credit and 24 hours of CE in management-related subjects. The test is administered in cities across the country.

“My former boss said I needed to do it, so I did,” says Bauman. “It’s a good way to make sure someone is well-rounded. And it’s a boost. When I received that certified letter that I’d passed, I cried like a baby, I was so proud.”
