Veterinary school creates kids book

Article

The book aims to teach third-graders about careers in the sciences.

To encourage students who want to pursue a career path as a veterinarian or scientist, the staff at the Purdue School of Veterinary Medicine has written an illustrated activity book highlighting Purdue scientists. How I Became a Scientist was created to help ease young students' fear of failure and to help them see they can have bright futures as veterinarians.

How I Became a Scientist is geared toward third-graders and is aimed at helping every child see himself or herself in the book. The book features a wide variety of scientists, including veterinarians, and they come from all over the world.

The writing, editing, and illustrations were done within the Purdue School of Veterinary Medicine and students at area schools will get the opportunity to meet the scientists they learn about in the book. The first of three books to be published, How I Became a Scientist is part of a larger program that works with teachers to develop lessons in the classroom and get more kids involved in health sciences.
