Robin Brogdon, MA, owner and president of BluePrints Veterinary Marketing Group, talks about why she decided to found VetSOAP — the Veterinary Specialists Outreach & Awareness Project. Brogdon says that not many veterinarians are referring their patients to specialists or they are referring patients to specialists too late. VetSOAP helps to enhance the collaborative relationship between primary care veterinarians and veterinary specialists.

Referrals and collaborative care are good for everyone, says Brogdon. Research on collaborative care benefits for dogs with congestive heart failure found that collaborative care practices had 74 percent greater longevity and 22 percent greater life-time revenue value for the primary care veterinarian. Collaborative care at an appropriate time within the disease process is ultimately going to benefit the entire profession, she says.
