Webinar series to highlight inspiring work being done to advance One Medicine

Humanimal Trust, a UK charity founded in 2014 by orthopedic-neuro veterinary surgeon, Professor Noel Fitzpatrick, MVB, DSc(Hon), DUniv CertSAO, CertVR, DACVSMR, DECVSMR, DSAS(Orth), MRCVS, will host the first in a series of webinars on May, 5, 2023, at 12.30 pm (BST), focusing on the association between humans and animals and importance of One Medicine.

Humanimal Trust fosters collaboration among veterinarians, doctors, researchers, nurses, and allied professions so all humans and animals benefit from sustainable and equal medical progress, but not at the expense of an animal’s life. This is the concept behind One Medicine, according to an organizational release.¹

This first virtual event will unite Humanimal Trust CEO, Joe Bailey with research support manager, Iva Hauptmannova to discuss what One Medicine looks like currently and its possibilities going forward.

Every month, the charity will host a webinar on a new realm of One Medicine, with speakers varying from academics and scientists to practitioners and professionals throughout different fields of human and animal medicine.The series will conclude in a live event on May 6, 2024, One Medicine Day, to honor the trust’s 10th anniversary.

“A One Medicine approach can and will benefit all species and ensure a more sustainable future,” said Joe Bailey, CEO of Humanimal Trust, in the release. “Reciprocity is the only way forward; it saves time, saves money and will ultimately save lives. Collaboration between human and animal medical professionals is fundamental to this.”¹

“In the run up to our 10th anniversary, we wanted to create a platform for all those involved in making One Medicine happen to share the inspiring work they are doing to bring about positive change for all beings,” he added.

“Education underpins everything we do. It is only by educating the next generation of professionals, starting at the very earliest stage, that we will change the professional landscape for One Medicine. With this in mind, each webinar will attract different audiences from veterinary and human medical clinicians to researchers, students and young people,” said Bailey.¹

Additional featured speakers will be Catherine Pendegrass, PhD, BVSc (Hons), associate professor at University College London, who will describe osseointegration in humans and animals, and Nick Jukes, co-ordinator of InterNICHE, who will speak on humane education.
