-- A new survey shows that pets have equal status with other members of many American households, a finding that translates into business for veterinarians.
In the Associated Press/Petside.com poll released earlier this week, 50 percent of respondents said their pets are as much a part of the household as anyone else.
Among single people, 66 percent of women and 52 percent of men ranked their pets as full household members, while 46 percent of married women and 43 percent of married men did so.
The poll also found that dog owners tend to treat their pets more like family members than cat owners, taking their dogs on family vacations, for example, more often than cat owners do and including the family dog in holiday cards and family portraits more often than cats.
